Organization of American States (OAS) Investigates Crimes Against Humanity by Government of Nicaragua

Nicaragua’s current crisis erupted in April 2018 when a civic and peaceful protest was met with a government violence.

As a result of the growing instability, the Nicaraguan government agreed with the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and the Organization of American States (OAS) to allow a group of independent international experts, known as the Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts (GIEI), to investigate the six-week period between April 18 and the end of May to determine who was responsible.

The GIEI had planned to present its findings publicly in Nicaragua on December 20th of 2018. However, it was prohibited from doing so by the government. In addition, they were forced to leave the country.

The following three reports were compiled by NACD to provide a summary of the complete report in English as well as in Spanish, along with the complete report (Spanish).
